Investor Ready workshop for Accelerators and Industry Groups

for their members / clients who are newer entrepreneurs & investors

Background: The Angel Forum since 1997 has organized two semi-annual meetings per year where 18 companies present to 50+ angel investors in 1 day.

Since 1998, we also have done 2-4 full day workshops per year that we organize, market and deliver these workshops ourselves. These are for entrepreneurs and investors on topics such as Angel Capital Overview, Due Diligence, Valuation of Pre-Revenue Companies, Term Sheets, Exit Strategies, Market Research and Board of Directors. They usually involve an angel investor expert from the US Angel Capital Assoc who leads the workshop, small group case studies and panels of local angel investors such as Boris Wertz, Paul Geyer, Mike Volker and Basil Peters and others. They are always full at around 50+ people. For an overview please see https://www.confmanager.com/main.cfm?cid=77&nid=10379

Investor Ready workshop

We do a full or half day Investor Ready workshops where we deliver just the content (including a 200+ page workbook) and the hosting organization does everything else. 12 workshops have been held in past 2 years in BC.

To date the Investor Ready workshop has been held for 20 to 45 people each at entrepreneurship@UBC, Accelerate Okanagan, BC Institute of Technology, Venture Kamloops as well as for MISTIC in Nanaimo, Northern Development Trust in Prince George, KAST in Nelson and OSTEC in Kelowna.

It is particularly cost effective for hosts who want to hold their own private workshop in communities outside of Vancouver looking to develop their local entrepreneurs & investors.

Topics covered are (draft agenda):

Financing Map & Options (top topic)

What do Investors look for (Due Diligence)?

The Art of Investor Presentations (top topic)

Small group Due Diligence Case (popular)

Understanding Angel Investors

20 second Elevator pitches by attendees

Management, Management

Follow-up & Coaching/ Directors

Barriers to Competition

Panel: investor & entrepreneur (popular)

We have found that the Elevator Pitch, Case Study and end of day Panel are very effective for the attendees

Open to everyone: Our experienced recommendation from over 50 workshops in Vancouver, is to have a full day workshop open to everyone in your community. But if needed, the topics can be separated into a morning session only for investors who may wish to remain anonymous and an afternoon session for entrepreneurs, but not all topics can be covered in a half day. An end of day panel of local experienced serial entrepreneurs and angel investors, could be organized by the host followed by a networking reception. Half day workshops appear to be less popular.

Workshop Leader: Bob Chaworth-Musters has an extensive background in corporate and international finance plus investment management in Vancouver, the Middle East and London, England. In 1997, he started the ANGEL Forum, one of the largest & oldest angel groups in Canada and he is a Founding 100 Member of Canada's National Angel Organization and is a member of the US Angel Capital Association. At the Angel Forum, usually ~18+ pre-screened companies seeking equity funding up to $1 million, deliver "live" presentations to 50+ pre-screened investors. Since 1998, it has offered Investor Ready™ workshops for entrepreneurs and investors. He has organized over 35+ full day financial workshops in BC. Previously he taught the Investment Funds in Canada workshops to financial professionals who required these workshops to be licensed by Securities Commissions.

Organizing:  The host's primary responsibility is marketing to their membership and the surrounding community. Their secondary responsibility is organizing a venue, equipment, registration and catering although we can do this if necessary. We deliver the content (including a 200+ page workbook) for a flat fee plus travel expenses and workbook printing. A comparable workshop if available, usually requires a substantial license fee of $4,000 to $6,000 plus travel expense that in total, is not economic for smaller audiences of less than 50 people.

Financial: We are very willing to advise on organizing a workshop, where the host will break even or better financially. Usually the registration fees will cover the out of pocket venue, catering and workbook printing costs ($15-$18 / book). The workshop content, workshop leader and travel costs have been covered by third parties.

We recommend that the host charges an average registration fee of $100 to attendees (see Accelerate Okanagan, UBC and BCIT comments below). We do not recommend a free workshop because “free” suggests that the content has no value and ~20% of registrations will not bother to turn up. Our post workshop evaluations indicate people are willing to pay $200 to $400 for this full day workshop. Our Vancouver full day workshops average $300 per person and always are full with 50 to 60 attendees.

Other revenue sources could include sponsorship (say $500 each) by local law, accounting and other firms.

Timing: Our experience is that 2-3 months for marketing are required after the date and venue have been set. At least 3 marketing messages are suggested with limited numbers of early bird and regular priced seats with various deadlines to incentivize people to register early.  50% of the attendees should be registered 30 days before the workshop date.
